Our whole lives we are told we “have to start worrying about …. our future…. our grades in school…. our mortgage… etc.” So is it any wonder around 1 million Americans suffer from panic attacks every month!
So you want to know, what is anxiety? In essence, anxiety is a sense of fear and/or a feeling of inevitable doom.
For me (and maybe you too) anxiety means living in a cycle of constant worry and stress. It also means I experiencing physical problems, either imagined or real, like sleepless nights, high blood pressure or ‘phantom’ symptoms of any illness I concentrate on. Anxiety means watching everyone around me have a life, while I get trapped in my own thoughts, afraid to do anything.
Scientists say anxiety disorder refers to either:
- Generalized anxiety: Daily obsessive thinking and dwelling on “What-ifs”. Leads to worry and depression.
- Post-traumatic stress disorder: Anxiety resulting from exposure to extreme trauma.
- Phobias: A persistent fear of certain objects, activities or situations. The most common form of anxiety.
- Obsessive-compulsive disorders: Obsessive thoughts leading to compulsions (tasks or ‘rituals’) which are seen to ease the obsessions.
